Ser - to be (characteristic)

Usage

Identity, classification, and how something is presented:

  • Identity, occupation, nationality, and origin (Soy médico; Es de España)
  • Relationships and material (Es mi hermana; Es de plata)
  • Time and date (Son las diez)
  • Passive voice (Las notas son publicadas)

Key Differences from Estar

  • Do not treat ser as simply “permanent” and estar as simply “temporary.” A marriage can be lasting (Están casados), while identity and origin normally take ser.
  • Use ser to identify, classify, give origin or material, tell time, and form the passive voice.
  • Use estar for location, conditions, and many resulting states. The adjective can change meaning: Es aburrido (he is boring) vs. Está aburrido (he is bored).
