These three pronouns share identical conjugation patterns in all tenses. "Él" refers to a male person or masculine noun, "ella" to a female person or feminine noun, and "usted" is the formal singular "you" used to show respect or maintain professional distance.
"Usted" (often abbreviated as Ud.) is generally used across all Spanish speaking areas, however usage varies slightly. Some areas like Spain are becoming more relaxed with "usted" being used less frequently. Other areas, like in Costa Rica and Colombia, maintain more frequent usage and will use "usted" even with spouses and family members.
