French conjugation is difficult because written forms and spoken forms do not always line up. Several present-tense endings are silent, so je parle, tu parles, and ils parlent sound very similar even though the spelling changes.
French also uses compound tenses constantly. Learners need to choose the right auxiliary, usually avoir or être, and then form the past participle. Irregular verbs such as être, avoir, aller, and faire appear early and need repeated practice.
Use the present tense for current actions, habits, and general statements.
Example: parler
je parle
tu parles
il/elle/on parle
nous parlons
vous parlez
ils/elles parlent
Example: finir
je finis
tu finis
il/elle/on finit
nous finissons
vous finissez
ils/elles finissent
Example: vendre
je vends
tu vends
il/elle/on vend
nous vendons
vous vendez
ils/elles vendent
Use the imparfait for background, descriptions, habits, and ongoing past actions.
Example: parler
je parlais
tu parlais
il/elle/on parlait
nous parlions
vous parliez
ils/elles parlaient
Example: finir
je finissais
tu finissais
il/elle/on finissait
nous finissions
vous finissiez
ils/elles finissaient
Example: vendre
je vendais
tu vendais
il/elle/on vendait
nous vendions
vous vendiez
ils/elles vendaient
Use the passé composé for completed past actions; most regular verbs use avoir plus a past participle.
Example: parler
j' ai parlé
tu as parlé
il/elle/on a parlé
nous avons parlé
vous avez parlé
ils/elles ont parlé
Example: finir
j' ai fini
tu as fini
il/elle/on a fini
nous avons fini
vous avez fini
ils/elles ont fini
Example: vendre
j' ai vendu
tu as vendu
il/elle/on a vendu
nous avons vendu
vous avez vendu
ils/elles ont vendu
Use the futur simple for actions that will happen later.
Example: parler
je parlerai
tu parleras
il/elle/on parlera
nous parlerons
vous parlerez
ils/elles parleront
Example: finir
je finirai
tu finiras
il/elle/on finira
nous finirons
vous finirez
ils/elles finiront
Example: vendre
je vendrai
tu vendras
il/elle/on vendra
nous vendrons
vous vendrez
ils/elles vendront
Use the conditionnel for would-statements, polite requests, and hypothetical actions.
Example: parler
je parlerais
tu parlerais
il/elle/on parlerait
nous parlerions
vous parleriez
ils/elles parleraient
Example: finir
je finirais
tu finirais
il/elle/on finirait
nous finirions
vous finiriez
ils/elles finiraient
Example: vendre
je vendrais
tu vendrais
il/elle/on vendrait
nous vendrions
vous vendriez
ils/elles vendraient
Use the subjonctif présent after triggers for wishes, doubt, necessity, and emotion.
Example: parler
que je parle
que tu parles
qu'il/elle/on parle
que nous parlions
que vous parliez
qu'ils/elles parlent
Example: finir
que je finisse
que tu finisses
qu'il/elle/on finisse
que nous finissions
que vous finissiez
qu'ils/elles finissent
Example: vendre
que je vende
que tu vendes
qu'il/elle/on vende
que nous vendions
que vous vendiez
qu'ils/elles vendent
