Condicional - Conditional

The condicional expresses hypothetical actions or what "would" happen. All three verb groups use the same endings. Like the futuro, it adds those endings directly to the infinitive, or to an irregular conditional stem. Use it for:

  • Hypothetical situations
  • Polite requests
  • Expressing what "would" happen
  • Reported speech in the past
  • Probability in the past
  • Suggestions or advice

Regular Conjugations

Pronoun -AR/-ER/-IR
yo -ía
tú -ías
él/ella/ud. -ía
nosotros -íamos
vosotros -íais
ellos/uds. -ían

Like the future, the conditional keeps the infinitive whole and adds its endings to it.

Common Irregulars

The conditional takes the same changed stems as the future.

Pronoun decir hacer poder poner tener
yo diría haría podría pondría tendría
tú dirías harías podrías pondrías tendrías
él/ella/ud. diría haría podría pondría tendría
nosotros diríamos haríamos podríamos pondríamos tendríamos
vosotros diríais haríais podríais pondríais tendríais
ellos/uds. dirían harían podrían pondrían tendrían

Common Stem Changes

The following verbs (and their compounds) have irregular stems in the condicional:

  • salir → saldr-
  • venir → vendr-
  • valer → valdr-
  • haber → habr-
  • saber → sabr-
  • caber → cabr-
  • querer → querr-

Use it in the standard conditional pattern (Si tuviera tiempo, viajaría), for reported future in the past (Dijo que vendría), and for a past-time guess (Serían las diez).
